Things I Believe: Success Should Never Cost You Your Soul

By Nino Mihilli | Entrepreneur, Author, Founder of T47 Group, Creator of Xsatori, and Author of The Variable

The older I get, the less interested I become in chasing success at any cost.

I've met people with impressive titles who were deeply unhappy.

I've met wealthy people who had very little peace.

I've met leaders who had influence but no integrity.

Those experiences have caused me to rethink what winning actually looks like.

Today, I believe something different.

Success should never cost you your soul.

Every "Yes" Comes With a Price

One lesson entrepreneurship teaches quickly is that every opportunity has a cost.

Sometimes it's financial.

Sometimes it's time.

Sometimes it's stress.

Sometimes it's relationships.

The question isn't whether you'll pay a price.

The question is whether the price is worth paying.

I've learned to ask myself:

Will this opportunity move me closer to the person I want to become—or farther away?

That question has saved me from pursuing things that looked attractive but weren't aligned with my values.

Achievement Without Integrity Isn't Success

There are many ways to build a business.

Some build through shortcuts.

Some build through manipulation.

Some build through promises they never intend to keep.

That has never interested me.

Not because I'm perfect.

Far from it.

Because I've learned that reputation is one of the few assets you carry into every future opportunity.

Lose money, and you can earn it back.

Lose a business, and you can build another.

Lose your integrity, and rebuilding trust becomes much harder.

Character is slow to build and quick to lose.

My Faith Is My Compass

When business decisions become difficult, I try to return to one simple question:

Does this honor God?

That doesn't mean every decision is easy.

It doesn't mean every answer is obvious.

But it reminds me that success isn't simply about outcomes.

It's about obedience.

It's about stewardship.

It's about treating people with dignity, even when it's inconvenient.

Jesus asked a question that has stayed with me for years:

"What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" — Matthew 16:26

That's not just a spiritual question.

It's a business question.

It's a leadership question.

It's a life question.

Why I Build

People sometimes ask what motivates me to keep building.

The answer isn't money.

Money is a tool.

The answer isn't recognition.

Recognition fades.

The answer is purpose.

I enjoy solving problems.

Creating opportunities.

Helping people.

Building teams.

Writing stories that make readers think.

Developing technology that challenges conventional thinking.

Those things energize me because they create value beyond myself.

The Variable Was Built Around a Question

When I wrote The Variable, I kept returning to one idea:

What happens when people are forced to choose between what's easy and what's right?

That tension exists throughout the novel because it exists throughout life.

Every one of us eventually faces moments where our values are tested.

Those moments define us far more than our victories ever will.

Final Thoughts

As I've grown older, I've stopped asking,

"How successful can I become?"

Instead, I ask,

"Can I become successful without compromising who I am?"

For me, that's the challenge worth pursuing.

Because businesses can grow.

Books can sell.

Technology can evolve.

But if those things come at the expense of your faith, your family, or your integrity...

The price is simply too high.

Success is meaningful.

But not at any cost.
