Adapting by Nino Mihilli

The Most Valuable Skill Nobody Talks About
By Nino Mihilli | Entrepreneur, Author, and Founder of T47 Group
If someone asked what skill has helped me the most throughout life and business, they might expect an answer like:
Leadership.
Sales.
Negotiation.
Marketing.
Communication.
Those skills are important.
But there is another skill that rarely gets discussed.
A skill that has helped me navigate business, adversity, relationships, faith, and personal growth.
Adaptability.
The ability to adjust when life doesn't go according to plan.
Life Rarely Follows the Script
When we're young, we often imagine life unfolding a certain way.
We create plans.
We set goals.
We develop timelines.
Then reality shows up.
Unexpected opportunities appear.
Unexpected setbacks arrive.
Markets change.
People change.
Circumstances change.
The people who thrive are not always the smartest.
They are often the most adaptable.
Because they understand that flexibility is not weakness.
It's wisdom.
Entrepreneurship Is a Constant Exercise in Adaptation
One thing business teaches very quickly is that no plan survives unchanged.
You can prepare.
You can strategize.
You can forecast.
And you should.
But eventually reality forces adjustments.
Some of the best opportunities I've experienced were opportunities I never originally planned for.
Some of the biggest lessons came from situations I never wanted.
Looking back, many of those moments ended up creating growth I could not have predicted.
That is the power of adaptability.
It allows people to move forward instead of getting stuck.
Faith Helps During Uncertain Seasons
The Bible says:
"In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps." — Proverbs 16:9
I've always loved that verse.
It encourages planning.
But it also reminds us that we are not in complete control.
Faith creates peace during uncertainty.
It allows us to trust even when the path changes.
It allows us to move forward even when we don't have all the answers.
And sometimes the detour becomes the destination we never saw coming.
The Inspiration Behind The Variable
One of the themes I explored in The Variable was how people respond when their world suddenly changes.
Some resist.
Some panic.
Some adapt.
The characters face situations they never expected.
And their ability—or inability—to adapt shapes their future.
That theme exists far beyond fiction.
It exists in every one of our lives.
Because eventually all of us encounter situations that force change.
The question becomes:
How will we respond?

Growth Requires Flexibility
One reason many people struggle during transitions is because they become attached to a specific outcome.
They become attached to one path.
One plan.
One vision.
But growth often requires flexibility.
Sometimes the opportunity is not where we expected it to be.
Sometimes the lesson is not the one we wanted.
Sometimes the answer looks completely different than the original plan.
And that's okay.
Because adaptability allows us to continue moving forward.
Final Thoughts
The older I get, the more I believe adaptability is one of life's most valuable skills.
It helps us navigate change.
It helps us survive adversity.
It helps us grow.
And it helps us discover opportunities we may have otherwise missed.
Stay flexible.
Stay faithful.
Keep moving forward.
Because sometimes the best chapters of life begin with an unexpected change in direction.
