Build a Life You Don't Need a Vacation From

Years ago, I heard someone say,

"Build a life you don't need a vacation from."

At first, I thought it sounded unrealistic.

Everyone needs rest.

Everyone needs time away.

I certainly do.

But the older I get, the more I understand what that statement really means.

It isn't about never taking a vacation.

It's about creating a life you genuinely enjoy living.

Success Without Joy Isn't Really Success

As entrepreneurs, it's easy to become addicted to the next milestone.

The next client.

The next company.

The next product.

The next goal.

For years, I believed happiness lived somewhere in the future.

"Once I accomplish this..."

"Once I build that..."

"Once I reach this goal..."

But every entrepreneur eventually discovers something.

The finish line keeps moving.

There's always another mountain to climb.

If your happiness always lives in the next achievement, you'll spend your entire life chasing it.

I Love the Process

One reason I continue building companies, writing books, and exploring AI isn't because I enjoy checking boxes.

It's because I genuinely enjoy the process.

I enjoy solving problems.

I enjoy brainstorming new ideas.

I enjoy learning something I didn't know yesterday.

Some of my favorite moments aren't launches.

They're the quiet mornings when an idea suddenly makes sense.

Or when a difficult problem finally has a solution.

That's the work I love.

Family Changed My Definition of Success

Becoming a husband and father changed my perspective.

Business is important.

Purpose is important.

But there are moments that no business milestone can replace.

A conversation around the dinner table.

Watching your children grow.

Laughing with your spouse after a long day.

Those moments remind me why I work so hard in the first place.

The goal was never simply to build companies.

The goal was to build a meaningful life.

Faith Brings Balance

One of the greatest gifts my faith has given me is perspective.

It reminds me that work is important.

But work is not my identity.

Business is part of my calling.

It isn't my entire purpose.

Jesus often withdrew from the crowds to pray.

That example reminds me that productivity and rest are not enemies.

They're partners.

One without the other eventually becomes unhealthy.

The Variable Was Part of Living Fully

Writing The Variable wasn't something I had to do.

It was something I wanted to do.

For years, I had the idea in my mind.

Eventually, I realized something.

If I kept waiting for the perfect time, it might never happen.

So I started writing.

Not because it was guaranteed to succeed.

Because creating brings me joy.

The same joy I find in building businesses.

The same joy I find in learning.

The same joy I find in helping solve meaningful problems.

The Real Goal

Today, I think differently about success.

I still set ambitious goals.

I still enjoy entrepreneurship.

I still wake up excited to build.

But I also want to enjoy the journey.

Because one day, the journey becomes the story.

And I'd like mine to be one worth telling.

Final Thoughts

Life moves quickly.

Businesses grow.

Children grow.

Technology changes.

Books get written.

New opportunities appear.

Through all of it, I've learned one simple lesson.

Don't spend your entire life waiting to enjoy your life.

Build a life that reflects your values.

Build work that excites you.

Build relationships that matter.

Build faith that sustains you.

Build memories you'll never regret.

Because success isn't just about what you accomplish.

It's about waking up grateful for the life you're building.

And that's a goal worth pursuing.
