I Wasn't Ready for Most of the Things That Changed My Life

I think we spend too much time waiting to feel ready.

Ready to start the business.

Ready to apply for the position.

Ready to write the book.

Ready to build the idea.

Ready to have the conversation.

Ready to take the risk.

Looking back at my own life, there's something almost funny about that.

I wasn't ready for most of the things that changed my life.

I started anyway.

There Was Never a Perfect Moment

Entrepreneurship has a way of exposing how little you actually know.

You can research.

Plan.

Build spreadsheets.

Talk to experts.

Eventually, though, you have to make a decision with incomplete information.

That's uncomfortable.

Especially when your money, reputation, or time is on the line.

But I've learned that waiting until every question has an answer usually means waiting forever.

There is no perfect moment.

There's simply the moment when preparation has to become action.

Starting Flat Staffing Required Learning Along the Way

When we started Flat Staffing in 2018, I didn't have some magical blueprint showing exactly what the company would become.

We built.

We learned.

We listened to customers.

We solved problems.

We made mistakes.

Then we came back the next day and tried to do it better.

Eight years later, we're still learning.

I actually think that's one of the reasons we've continued growing.

We never assumed we had everything figured out.

Technology Put Me Back at the Starting Line

One of the things I love about technology and artificial intelligence is that they constantly make me a beginner again.

And I mean that as a compliment.

There are days when I'm learning something I didn't even know existed a week earlier.

That's humbling.

It's also exciting.

Working on technology through T47 Group and building projects like Xsatori has reinforced something I've believed for years:

You don't need to know everything before you begin.

You need enough curiosity to start and enough humility to keep learning.

Then I Decided to Write a Novel

Writing The Variable might be one of my favorite examples.

I wasn't sitting around thinking:

"I'm an author. It's time to write my next novel."

I was an entrepreneur with a story I wanted to tell.

Those are very different things.

There were plenty of reasons not to do it.

I had businesses to run.

A family.

Other projects.

And I was stepping into an entirely different creative world.

But eventually, you have to stop wondering whether you can do something and find out.

So I wrote.

One page became another.

Eventually, there was a manuscript.

And now The Variable is sitting on Amazon where someone I've never met can discover it and read the story.

I'm glad I didn't wait until I felt like an author before becoming one.

Faith Doesn't Require Seeing the Entire Road

This lesson has also become deeply connected to my faith.

We often want God to show us the entire plan.

Where are we going?

How will it work?

What happens after that?

I've certainly asked those questions.

But faith rarely works that way.

Hebrews 11:1 says:

"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."

Sometimes we're given enough light for the next step.

Not the next hundred.

And maybe that's intentional.

Because if we could see everything, we wouldn't need much faith.

Being Uncomfortable Can Be a Good Sign

I've also stopped assuming discomfort means I'm headed in the wrong direction.

Sometimes discomfort simply means I'm growing.

Being a beginner is uncomfortable.

Taking responsibility is uncomfortable.

Putting your work in front of the world is uncomfortable.

Walking into a room where you don't know anyone is uncomfortable.

But comfort has never taught me nearly as much as stretching beyond it.

You Become Ready by Doing

This may be the biggest lesson.

We think:

Ready → Start → Grow

My experience has usually looked more like:

Start → Struggle → Learn → Grow → Become Ready for the next challenge

Readiness is often the result.

Not the requirement.

Final Thoughts

Maybe there's something you've been thinking about starting.

A business.

A book.

A career change.

A conversation.

A completely different chapter of your life.

Prepare.

Pray.

Seek wise counsel.

Do your homework.

But eventually...

Take the step.

You may not feel ready.

I certainly didn't.

And some of the greatest blessings in my life were waiting on the other side of starting anyway.
